FlowIO: Revolutionizing Soft Robotics and Programmable Materials

Ali Shtarbanov's Award-Winning Pneumatics Development Platform

FlowIO, a groundbreaking pneumatics development platform, is set to democratize the emerging field of soft robotics and programmable materials. Designed by Ali Shtarbanov, this innovative platform aims to make rapid prototyping more accessible for researchers, artists, designers, and makers.

FlowIO stands out due to its fully-integrated, general-purpose development platform for control of soft robots and programmable materials. It features magnetically connected pump modules that are swappable on-the-fly, catering to diverse project needs. The platform is complemented by a software toolkit with mobile and desktop graphical interfaces, Bluetooth controls, and APIs for Arduino and JavaScript. This allows users from any technical background to unleash their creativity with FlowIO.

The technology behind FlowIO is as impressive as its capabilities. The platform includes a main module, different pump modules, expansion modules, and accessories. All these components are enclosed in 3D-printed snap-fit enclosures, which can be printed in any color. The platform's hardware designs are open-source, further promoting accessibility and innovation.

FlowIO is not just about control; it's about versatility. With five pneumatic I/O ports, each capable of seven actions, and three swappable pump modules, it can satisfy different needs for pressures, size, and flow-rates. Expansion modules and accessories enable additional sensing, control, and mounting options for both wearable and nonwearable applications. BLE Capability, multiple APIs, and a GUI enable diverse options for interacting with FlowIO.

FlowIO was born out of necessity at the MIT Media Lab and has undergone over 20 prototype iterations, with numerous new features added during those iterations. It has been used by a diverse range of individuals, from PhD researchers and high-school students to makers and artists. The platform has enabled the development of projects in various categories, including interactivity, artistic expression, locomotion, telepresence, haptic feedback, and assistive technologies.

Despite the challenges of making FlowIO highly energy-efficient and miniaturized yet fully-integrated, Shtarbanov succeeded in creating a platform that is 5-10 times smaller than other pneumatic platforms with far fewer capabilities. The development of multiple APIs and a cross-platform GUI was another major challenge that was successfully overcome.

FlowIO's innovation and potential have not gone unnoticed. The platform was awarded Silver in the A' Scientific Instruments and Research Equipment Design Award in 2021. This prestigious accolade is awarded to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. With FlowIO, Shtarbanov has indeed showcased a remarkable level of excellence and introduced a tool that is set to revolutionize the field of soft robotics and programmable materials.
